Join representatives from the British Columbia Ministries of Education and Advanced Education and the British Columbia Council for International Education for a presentation on British Columbia’s active, education-related Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs). The session will open with a 15-minute presentation providing a high level overview of the MOUs. This will be followed by a 20-minute, interactive discussion with session participants on ways for institutions and schools to leverage the MOUs to advance in-market relationships. The session will close with 20 minutes for participants to meet with Ministry and BCCIE representatives to signal interest in specific MOUs.  Combined, the two Ministries maintain active, education-related MOUs with governments in China, Japan, France, Spain, Italy, and Colombia.

Professional media and institutional professionals in Public Relations cover or respond to international education issues with great regularity, and not always to a readership of the converted. 

This session will address two key issues that present themselves for us in International Education:

1. How to get a story across. How to be proactive in getting your story up to your Communications team or from them to the media.  What constitutes news or a good news story? How to be proactive.
2. Issue / Crisis management: How to respond to issues with media that have potentially huge reputational consequences for your district institution. How to get in front of the story.

Both speakers are interested in the pro-active side, the positive story that can shine a good light on the good our sector does or and the positive role for and result on the institution.  Both are also concerned with and aware of the importance of issue management. This session will also address how the sector might be more proactive in anticipating issues and getting in front of the story, and how we as a sector might become more sophisticated in dealing with the media.

This session is a virtually interactive session to request and learn more about the sector's market, service and professional development priorities. We will pose questions to the audience and see answers in real time.  A senior panel of IE administrators from diverse sectors will provide lively commentary and interpretation to the responses.

• Has HE fallen short in its ability to use the language that the broader public and community relate to?
• Are we truly engaged with a change agenda?
• What are we changing and to what end?
• Does it matter to our local communities?
• What are appropriate roles for HE in supporting the public and influencing public opinion?  
• What would success look like?
• We have clearly incorporated internationalization into the teaching agenda of HE, and quite successfully into the research agenda of HE, but what about the third pillar, that of community engagement?
• In terms of consultation with local communities, are we relevant to them?   If so, how?
• As internationalization evolves by culture, time and context, must we broaden our reach to greater community engagement?

1.  What are the roles and responsibilities of higher education and its institutions in helping the public address the impacts of globalization?  In this regard are there higher education roles in public diplomacy and public education that need greater attention given the apparent more conflicted environment around higher education internationalization as well as the rise of populist reactions to globalization?
2. If there are roles and responsibilities needing greater attention, what are the options for fulfilling these needs?
