Pre-conference Workshop I: Creating your Digital Marketing Strategy
Developing and implementing a digital marketing strategy for your institution can be a confusing and overwhelming endeavor. We all know simply having a website and being active on social media isn’t enough. Even if you currently have a strategy in place, are you confident it’s effective?

ICEF is here to eliminate the guesswork and ensure you leave the conference with a customized digital marketing plan you can begin implementing as soon as you arrive back to your school. How do you know where you are going if you don’t know where you are? We will walk you through a self-assessment worksheet to clearly define where you should devote your energies and resources. You will then be able to customize a plan based on your specific resources and pain points.

Education Governance Models
Join this session for an overview of governance structures in our education sector and province and how we can best utilize these structures. Whether you are new to Education, new to the International Education sector, or are a seasoned veteran, understanding and navigating governance structures across the diversity of our sector can be a complicated endeavour. Increasingly we need to deal with our federal, provincial and municipal governments at different levels. We need to engage with the administration of public school districts and elected trustees. Our post-secondary system has evolved from universities with medieval structures that carry weight and tradition today to leaner and modern community colleges.

Things we should be talking about in International Education
The discourse around student mobility has altered over the last decade or so. Less emphasis is placed on the idea of trans-national education as a collective good and more focus is given to personal, utilitarian benefits. However, an ill-advised preoccupation with “culture” remains at the heart of the rhetoric. This has condemned international education to the margins of academic relevance and generated an anodyne agenda based on the failure to recognize that the world has changed and, above all, that nations are not aligned with cultures. We are, in short not having serious conversations. In this session, the speakers will review the state of international education and suggest that there is a need for a radical rethink of some core assumptions.

Media and International Education

Professional media and institutional professionals in Public Relations cover or respond to international education issues with great regularity, and not always to a readership of the converted.

This session will address two key issues that present themselves for us in International Education:

  1. How to get a story across. How to be proactive in getting your story up to your Communications team or from them to the media.  What constitutes news or a good news story? How to be proactive.
  2. Issue / Crisis management: How to respond to issues with media that have potentially huge reputational consequences for your district institution. How to get in front of the story.

Both speakers are interested in the pro-active side, the positive story that can shine a good light on the good our sector does or and the positive role for and result on the institution.  Both are also concerned with and aware of the importance of issue management. This session will also address how the sector might be more proactive in anticipating issues and getting in front of the story, and how we as a sector might become more sophisticated in dealing with the media.

Research, application, teaching, learning, training, marketing, recruitment, admissions, data, tracking, retention, accreditation, credit, recognition, service, administration, transparency, communication. BREXIT and International Education
What will be the effect of BREXIT on UK education and how much is likely to change? Britain's decision to exit the European Union immediately sent key economic and social programs into disarray. For younger generations of British youth who have never known life outside the EU, and for both those studying abroad and for EU students in the UK.

There is valid concern that BREXIT could cause a significant reduction in the numbers of students from across Europe and from around the world who choose to study in the UK, as international tuition fees may rise and all may encounter a more complex visa regime. Hear from three British experts on the issue of BREXIT and International Education.

Technology may be able to make delivery of education and even learning faster, higher, and stronger, but our nature and social structures still necessitate a human element.  The changes being experienced by the education sector have to somehow be implemented through policy, and “sold” not only to other educators and to students, but also to governments and other stakeholders.  The impact of technology on pedagogy, distribution channels, and government policy will be explored in this session by Languages Canada Executive Director Gonzalo Peralta and BCCIE Lifetime Achievement Award winner and CEO SMRT English, Jim Clark

Study Choice Platforms and You. Why Universities Use Them.
Study choice platforms are online portals that function as a two-sided marketplace, used by both prospective international students to search for higher education programs and by institutions to reach interested audiences that their limited resources prevent them from engaging. In this presentation, we will present a case study profiling a few different Canadian institutions who have partnered with StudyPortals and other study choice platforms, explaining why they moved to online recruitment, what were the benefits and the limitations they found, and what outcomes they have experienced. This would be a good session for any school considering diversifying their recruitment portfolio.

British Columbia: Ahead or behind the global competition curve?
At USD 170 billion and 5 plus million students, International Education has become a veritable modern Völkerwanderung. British Columbia has carved out a disproportionate niche in this landscape on the strength of its educational quality offering, its geographic location, and as part of a larger Canada brand and immigration narrative. This success has not taken place in a vacuum – other countries and regions have started or redoubled recruiting efforts which puts competitive pressure on BC institutions. At the same time, BC’s value proposition has changed – especially since Vancouver is now one of the highest cost cities in the world.

This session offers data, analysis, and insights from key sending and receiving countries, and highlights the impact of three trends – volatility, competitiveness, and analytics – on BC.

Creating a proactive strategy to positively impact the conversation about international students
Why is it that the vast majority of stories in the press about international education are negative? Reporters, parents and sometimes even our colleagues perpetuate negative stereotypes about international students in our schools and communities. These misconceptions then dominate the dialogue. This session will provide messaging tips for schools communication strategy, and explore how we as practitioners and leaders in international educators can proactively ensure that the true value of internationalization is understood and communicated.

The content of this session is applicable to K-12, PSE and Language.

Global Issues Panel: Is there a calm port for our Ship of Values in this perfect storm?
It was all going so well, until it wasn't. Greece. Crimea. Aleppo. Migrants by Land and Sea and the Little Boy who washed up on to our front pages. Paris. Immigrants. Ukraine. The Wall. Wikileaks. Assange and Hillary's server. Putin. Refugees. Nice. Erdogan. Bruxelles. Brexit. Orlando. Mosul. Trump. Bannon. Yemen. Breitbart. Wilders. Le Pen.
Is it the new normal, a new world order, a fundamental refashioning?  Or is it rather a blip, a bump in the road, one of a series of crises that afflicts the globe periodically and cyclically?
In the nascent climate of populism, protectionism, alternative facts and uncivil discourse, of Us and Them, perceptions of International Education (IE) and its humanitarian kindred of immigration and support for the needy have never been so low. Not in living memory have our sacred cows been so prone to uncomfortable, misinformed, uncivil and malicious scrutiny. Our ability to pursue what we have believed to be the noble aims of our sector is in jeopardy, including the real and perceived safety of the students and faculty we welcome and those we encourage out into the world. The underpinnings of our IE value system are under question and threatened by despots and deplorables from every side.  Or are they?  Maybe we’re just talking to ourselves.
Our panel of global IE leaders will address and engage together with discussion on the role and responsibility of Higher Education (HE) institutions and international leader to engage on these issues and perhaps more importantly, on how to support and engage with the general public to assist them in managing their responses to globalization?
  • Has HE fallen short in its ability to use the language that the broader public and community relate to?
  • Are we truly engaged with a change agenda?
  • What are we changing and to what end?
  • Does it matter to our local communities?
  • What are appropriate roles for HE in supporting the public and influencing public opinion?
  • What would success look like?
  • We have clearly incorporated internationalization into the teaching agenda of HE, and quite successfully into the research agenda of HE, but what about the third pillar, that of community engagement?
  • In terms of consultation with local communities, are we relevant to them?   If so, how?
  • As internationalization evolves by culture, time and context, must we broaden our reach to greater community engagement?

Research now has to demonstrate impact and innovation, and so in IE we also should consider what is our impact. We should develop research questions that matter to our local communities and begin to demonstrate concrete, meaningful outcomes.  We should clearly develop an understanding what are our "ends” and how will the public benefit.
  1.  What are the roles and responsibilities of higher education and its institutions in helping the public address the impacts of globalization?  In this regard are there higher education roles in public diplomacy and public education that need greater attention given the apparent more conflicted environment around higher education internationalization as well as the rise of populist reactions to globalization?
  2. If there are roles and responsibilities needing greater attention, what are the options for fulfilling these needs?

International Student Orientations: technology, partnerships and Canadian student participation
This session looks at transforming orientation through massive open online courses (MOOCs). What are we trying to accomplish with international student orientations? Student feedback informed the decision at Vancouver Island University to move away from static orientation presentations where students needed to absorb as much information as possible from presenters. Instead, relevant information in the form of a MOOC or online course is made available to students before their arrival on the D2L platform. Orientation day is then able to transform into a time to meet new people and to learn where to go for help. We’ll also learn about how UBC Okanagan manages to bring Canadian students on-board.

The content of this session is applicable to PSE.

How everyone in BC is being ranked: The meaning and impact of K-12 to research rankings explained
The world of International Education operates with few commonly agreed on performance measurement models or definitive hierarchies. Two major exceptions exist, however: For one, the PISA and TIMMS test batteries operated by the OECD launched as far back as the year 1995. PISA and TIMMS have become a key element of national comparison of K-12 school systems, and impacted domestic policy-makers and parents of prospective international students alike.

The second exception consist of the 19 international PSE institution rankings which cover a wide range of topics. Some of these rankings have become critical arbiters of student and resource movement trends, and often directly or indirectly shape debates about International Education issues. This session shares highlights of BC performances across all sectors, and discuss the impact of these tests / rankings on BC’s provincial and institutional brand.

The content of this session is applicable to K-12, PSE and Language.
